Internship Reel

Internship Journal Summation

I had the privilege and opportunity to work with Sea Life Ripple. The company is all about teaching people how to swim and then incorporating mindfulness into each swimming lesson. Sea Life Ripple is owned and operated by Kelsey, she is the swim coach you will get the chance to work with if you do choose to see what she has to offer.

Over the course of the 11 weeks, it was a combination of things that we did together. To start off, we dove into some of her older videos that had been completed by previous interns. In those videos we made some touch ups to make the video either more up to date or to change up some of the edits that had previously been in the video. When editing the videos for SLR I used premiere pro. I found that having used a program I am familiar with helped out with the time management of the videos. The other part of what I helped with was the social media side of things. I worked with Kelsey to get these short videos/reels made. The video would just be a little snippet of a topic, she would then send me the video and I would edit it. When editing it I would first add the Sea Life Ripple logo in the bottom right corner. I would then add some captions in the bottom middle, when adding the caption I would go back through and look at them to make sure every word was spelled correctly and that no word was left out. Lastly, I would add in any pictures or other little snippets of videos to make the video more entertaining, if need be. I did some separate research on how to grow your social media ages and what content you should be producing. This research helped me communicate with Kelsey on what she should do and make her pages grow.

If I were to say anything or any advice to the next intern for Sea Life Ripple, I would say that Kelsey is great to work with. She will work closely with you to achieve what she and you want. Kelsey is great at giving you just enough work to do and get done. She will not give you an overload of work to do, if she gives you an amount that you final is overwhelming just let her know she is very understanding and will not pressure you at all to get it all done in a certain amount of time. There will be times where you and Kelsey both will not know the answer, which is okay, she will take the time to learn with you. Overall, doing my first ever internship for Sea Life Ripple and with Kelsey, was a great learning experience and I have learned so much from both Kelsey and the internship itself.

The communications program did prepare me for this internship. In the internship we used Adobe Premier for editing videos and having had those classes where we learned how to use the program and how to do different things on it helped me out a lot. Having the knowledge on how to use this program and create different types of videos, like youtube style or a reel style, helped in knowing which style I should open. I would say one thing I missed out on learning from the communications program was the social media class. I signed up for the class and it got canceled overall because not enough students had signed up, but if the class would have happened I think it would have been very beneficial and helped me with the unknown content that I didn’t know. I think the overall vocabulary that is used in adobe or just in video editing helped me when I was looking up certain questions I had. When reading the articles, on the certain question, I understood what I needed to do and would help me explain it to Kelsey.

After doing this internship I think it kind of made my choice solid in wanting to go into the social media field and wanting to do it with a company or a sports team. I feel like before the internship I was a little unsure on if this was what I wanted to do, but after getting the chance to work closely with a company on their social media and editing some of their videos has made me realize I do want to do this type of work. I personally would want to be in person at a job I do, but if a great job comes along and is not in person I would be totally okay with that as well. I feel like having this internship for the most part online helped me gain some knowledge of what needs to be done when you aren’t going into work everyday. An understanding of what work online would be like versus one that would be totally in person. I feel like having experienced both doing a job in person and doing one online was great, they both can be completely different at times. Next, I plan on going to Delaware Tech’s Dover Campus to get my Associates Degree for Digital Communication, specifically in the photo imaging path. After I obtain that degree I would love to start working my way around the sports social media field in hopes to make my way up to be a part of the Philadelphia Eagles or Philadelphia Phillies social media team.

Overall, I feel that this internship has given me some insight into what I want to do for a career and what the work may look like. If I hadn’t had this opportunity to work with Sea Life Ripple and Kelsey I would not have gotten the insight that I was unknowingly looking for. The communications program helped me be able to obtain that internship and helped give me the knowledge on how to do all that I do.
